션팍 박성욱 사진작가님의 작품에는
미지의 세계같은 묘한 신비감이 있다
사진 기법으로만 작품을 만들어내는 작품은 흔지않은데 이번 작가 작품은
포토샵을 보정하지 않은 전통적 촬영으로 순수하게 작품을 만들어 냈다는데
감사한 마음이 들었다^^*
디지털 시대에 촬영 후 포토샵으로 정리하고 다듬은 작품이 대다수인데
이번 박성욱 작가 작품은 그렇지 않다는것이다
분위기 연출을 위해 약간 비가오는 날 새벽이나 밤에 촬영했다고 했다
작품에는 촉촉한 느낌과 함께 밤을 밝히는 불빛의 조화가
매력적으로 느껴진다

이번 작품의 주제는 Unknown USA (알려지지 않은 미국)이다. 이번 작품에 배경과 시간은 2012년 2월 미국 서부 LA를 떠나 동부 New York까지 횡단을 통해 본 미국 Suburb 지역 중 고속도로 옆에 위치한 값싼 모텔 근처에 펼쳐진 낯선 미국 풍경을 담았다. 이번 사진들에서 보이는 미국인들의 삶의 범위는 넉넉지 못한 소외된 사람들이 하루하루를 살아가기 위해 잠시 머무는 값싼 모텔이며 그들이 머무는 그 곳에서 펼쳐진 소도시의 모습이다. 오랜 시간 동안 관리되지 않아 허물어져 가는 주변의 모습들 그리고 발전하는 미국의 대도시와는 달리 시간이 정지되어 버린 것 같은 풍경들이 이번 나의 사진의 소재가 되었다.
지난 5년여 동안의 미국생활은 나의 인생의 찬란한 성공보다는 거대한 소비국가의 모습이였다. 나의 유학생활은 단지 이 거대한 소비국가에서 소비의 역할만을 담당하는 조연자의 역할이였다. 이런 이방인이 보는 시각하고 미국내의 소외계층들이 보는 시각은 얼마나 다를까 싶어서 시작한 작업이 이번 "Unknown USA"이다. 가장 화려한 모습을 가지고 세계에 알려져 있는 미국의 대도시의 풍경 그리고 잘 정리된 정원이 있는 넓은 주택, 그 속에서 한없이 평화로워 보이는 미국인들의 모습들은 지난 5년여 동안 내가 본 미국의 모습이었다. 하지만 이번 "Unknown USA"작업을 통해 보고 싶었던 미국의 모습 자본주의라는 힘의 체계에 눌려 그리고 소비만을 권장하는 대기업 광고의 영향에 밀려 싸구려 모텔에서 몸을 누운 채 어떤 꿈도 이루지 못한 허탈함과 미래에 대한 두려움과 함께 쓸쓸히 미국사회에서 이른 퇴장을 맞이해야 하는 소외된 미국인들의 모습이었다.

The concept of this body of work is Unknown USA. The backgrounds were suburb cheap motels near the highways through from L.A. to N.Y.C and this work contains the unfamiliar sceneries in February 2012. The photographs have where the marginalized people could stay a while in order to live day after day and the unfolding lives of Americans in the range of small towns. Unlike growing metropolitan areas of the United States, like the time would have been stopped for a long time because of not crumbling management, the sceneris bacame the materials of this body of work.
My life of the United States during the past five years was only a supporting role responsible for the huge consumption in the country. What would be the difference of vantage point between the underprivileged Americans and me was the instrument to start this body "Unknown USA". Known in the world, with the most flamboyant, the landscape of American cities and a large well-organized garden homes of Americans that looks infinitely peaceful in appearance was what I had seen in the United States during the past five years. But, in this work "Unknown USA," the underprivileged Americans’ lives under the capitalistic economy of the United States and the impact of advertising conglomerate recommended that only consumption appear. People in emotional and mental turmoil made by Baits of Freedom, consumption, and the chance of success are the images of modern life perhaps.
